The field of substance abuse prevention has evolved and broadened from historical views of prevention practice that are still commonly held today. When prevention strategies are being discussed by policymakers and community members, the first thoughts are still to teach youth in schools about the dangers of opioids, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs as a primary approach to prevent substance use. But is it effective?
Education alone is not effective and to create a path to reduce the risk of substance use and mental illness, it requires a much more comprehensive approach. The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health Wellness (OBHW) has created a comprehensive approach and has shifted the paradigm of prevention practice by supporting population health approaches that are effective in creating healthier communities which leads to healthier environments and community wellness. This segment will include an overview of how we infused a data driven prevention planning model into all facets of prevention planning; emphasis on the power of coalitions and the creation of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) prepared communities. Today’s prevention is research based, outcome focused and a community change model. Come and learn how to be a part of the change!
